Plain English Guides (PEG) available

Up date as of 4 March 2010

The Institute has prepared a number of Plain English Guides as a means of easily finding information over a wide range of electrical subjects.

Due to the recent publication of Electrical (Safety) Regulations 2010, the Plain English Guides are no longer available until they have been updated to cater for the new requirements of the new regulations and the Wiring Rules (AS/NZS 3000:2007 and amendment No. 1 and some companion standards).

When the revision work required has been completed, this page will be updated and details of how to order the new editions will be given.

The Institute will prepare a number of Plain English Guides as a means of easily finding information over a wide range of electrical subjects. The first publications from this PEG project committee are now available and cover areas that will assist tradespersons, apprentices and other electrical workers in their day to day work and during refresher courses for re-licensing purposes.

The below are all Under Revision -

PEG 1 Fundamental safety outcomes;

An explanation of the basis for the Wiring Rules. Knowledge of these outcomes considerably assists the understanding of requirements.

PEG 2 Touch voltage, earth fault loop impedance. 0.4 seconds protective device operating time and voltage drop;

An explanation of how all these factors provide a safe installation. Do you know how the 0.4 seconds protective device operating time is achieved? Get this guide to find out.

PEG 3  Currently not available.

PEG 4 Determination of Minimum cable size;

This guide gives advice on the consideration of the various factors required in the selection of the minimum size cable able to be used. The savings on the first use of this guide could more than pay for it’s purchase price.

PEG 5 Residual Current Devices;

This guide gives details on the correct application of RCD’s, where mandated, how to install RCD’s on switchboards and also contains a fault-finding guide for installation faults and nuisance tripping.

PEG 6 High fault currents and fault level estimations;

This guide details the factors which give rise to high fault currents and shows a simple graphical solution for the estimation of fault level in an installation so that correct fault level rated protection devices can be selected.

Set of PEG guides 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6

Electrical Installation Guide (Schneider Electrical) Printed copy is available for $100.00 + gst from Schneider Electric customer services on 0800 652 999 to purchase copies quoting the Schneider part No: MD1ELG2E.  A CD-ROM is also available.

The information contained is based on the international recommendations IEC60364, on which AS/NZS 3000 is based and contains considerable amount of information on electrical systems and is ideal information to assist in National certificate Electrical engineering level 4 and 5 studies.

Ordering of PEGs

To order PEGs, print the complete form with the PEG’s required and complete total cost  column and enclose cheque for total amount and post. Delivery of PEG’s will be by post.
